How Santa Claus Uses A Vendor Risk Management System to Improve Security

Santa Claus had a problem: One of his supposedly “trusted” elves had a candy cane sugar rush the first week of December and attempted to hack into Santa’s proprietary Naughty and Nice list database. The rogue elf didn’t get far when he was caught — he had only downloaded the list of naughty children from the Pacific Northwest, but was planning more cyberattacks. Santa immediately fired him and alerted the Easter bunny in case the elf sought employment elsewhere.

Guarding Data

“I was lucky I caught him when I did,” Santa explained. “The Naughty and Nice list is one of our core assets. Many children around the world work hard to be nice all year, so I owe it to them to protect their private information.”

Ongoing Monitoring

Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus manage North Pole Industries, using temporary, third-party elves who work only during the holidays.  Most elves are trustworthy, but it takes only one bad elf to put Santa’s reputation at risk. That’s why Santa is implementing SureID Certified™ Edge, a visitor risk management solution that offers complete background identity screening and ongoing subscription-based monitoring. “We work with many third-party vendors – sleigh builders, sugar plum manufacturers, gingerbread makers – and we need to be confident in knowing who to trust,” Santa continued.

Management Portal

SureID’s Certified Edge checks each elf’s employment with North Pole Industries, verifies their identity, monitors criminal records on an ongoing basis and handles credentialing. Every elf wears a security badge. Mrs. Claus commented, “Santa is busy in the workshop all year making toys, so I oversee security. Certified Edge has a portal that makes it easy for the vendors we use to manage their elves.”

Third-Party Integration & Privacy

Every third-party vendor can integrate their internal system with SureID’s platform. “The main North Pole Industries distribution center is enormous, creating thousands of toys for boys and girls,” Mrs. Claus explained. To make all this happen in time for Christmas, we rely on Certified Edge to monitor the background of our vendors for suspicious activity and possible breach activity.”

Santa added, “Third-party vendors are critical to our success. As we found out, all it takes is one disgruntled elf who figures out how to compromise the system to wreak havoc on our data and privacy controls. SureID’s Certified Edge allows me to sleep better at night.”
