Congratulations Joint Base Lewis-McChord on Turning 100!

This year, Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is celebrating an impressive and important milestone: its 100th anniversary.

What began as a fort built in 1917, JBLM has grown over the years into one of the world’s largest military installations, playing a pivotal role in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War, as well as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Now operating as a rapid deployment base, JBLM doesn’t just support our efforts and allies in South Korea and Japan, but serves our nation’s interests at a global level.

JBLM has changed a lot in 100 years. When it was built in 1917 it was called Camp Lewis – named for Merriweather Lewis of Lewis and Clark fame – and housed 36,000 officers and enlisted men. Today it houses 35,000 troops, supports 125,000 military retirees and more than 32,000 family members living on and off base.

To learn more about the history of this impressive facility, from its time as “Camp Lewis” to the construction of McChord Field to its current operations, check out this JBLM history page and read this informative article from NorthWestMilitary.com on how Lewis Army Museum is preparing to celebrate this historic occasion.
